Friday Newsletter

HAPPY FRIDAY! A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS WHO HELPED WITH MAP TESTING ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. THE STUDENTS DID AN EXCELLENT JOB TAKING THE TEST. I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BUNCH OF KIDDOS. THEY MAY BE THE MOST POLITE, FRIENDLY, AND CARING KIDS I HAVE EVER HAD. HOPEFULLY, YOUR CHILD IS HAVING AN AWESOME TIME IN 1ST GRADE AS WELL!

CURRICULUM NOTES:

READING: Please have your child read "Jack and Rick" to you in their blue reading books. Review all highlighted words in the story. All books should be returned on MONDAY. We are working on short i words and word families.

In Reading Workshop, students are learning decoding strategies to help them figure out words they don't know. This week I introdcued to them: Tryin' Lion, Lips the Fish, Stretchy the Snake, Skippy the Frog, Chunky Monkey, Eagle Eye, and Helpful Kangaroo. Please ask your child about these strategies and USE them at home when they are reading their books to you.

SPELLING: Students took their practice test today. If they have a +10 on their test, they WILL NOT take the test on THURSDAY. However, please keep practicing these words because they may see them again.  I have also noticed very low scores this year. Please get in the habit of practicing spelling words EVERY NIGHT. The spelling list will continue to get harder as the year progresses.  I have included a tab that gives you some ideas for practicing spelling.

MATH: Please practice with your child on counting by 5's orally and written. This week we worked on telling time to the hour, tally marks, and complements (sums) of 10 . For example, 2+8, 3+7, 1+9, etc. Also students, need to know their PHONE NUMBERS. I will be asking them within the next few weeks what their phone number is.

SCIENCE: We are discussing how plants and animals live.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students are learning about what city and state they live in. This is VERY confusing for them. Please review at home. We are talking about what types of businesses and places that we can go to in our city.

THINGS YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD WITH:
  • tying their shoes
  • remembering what day they have show n tell on (there's a new tab for this)
THIS N THAT:
The last week of September will be APPLE WEEK. We will be making several apple treats that week and I will need parent helpers with this. I won't be starting CENTERS until OCTOBER. If you are interested in being on the schedule in October, please let me know. Again, thank you for all that you do! Have a great weekend!
